First of all, welcome to Tel Aviv, the capital of Israeli consumerism. Here are the does and don't in our buying culture:
Shoes
With a large concentration of shoes and clothing stores, Tel Aviv is the capital of Israeli fashion. Here we have three types of shoe stores:
- Thereal leather boots – those that cost a lot of money and are worth it.
- Thefake leather boots – those that cost a lot of money and are not worth it.Their prices will drop down to their real value when winter starts. Since we don't havemuch rain in the fall, don't bother buying them in the beginning of theseason.
- Thefake shoe stores where you can bargain – If the owner is chasing you whenyou're exiting the shop without buying, this is the place to bargain.Bargain for half the price, because these shoes won't last forever…
Tips
Do not tip: hair dressers and taxi drivers. The hair dressers are already charging a high price in Israeli standards, and the cab drivers are charging more than they should, so you can bargain with them.
Do tip: the waiters. You are paying a lot for the alcohol here, but the waiters are not the ones who are making the profit.
Food
If you want cheap prices and fresh vegetables, go to the "Carmel" bazaar. It is right near our accommodation in Tel Aviv. If you are tired and lazy, just wear a coat over your pajamas and go to the AM PM – we have at least two of these in every street in our area.
Tuna, Reese's Pieces and M&Ms
Americans: Israel started importing these products about 10 years ago. Stop bringing loads of them!
